General: How does Jump Desktop use my Google account?

    Can you clear something up as regards using your Google ID to locate remote computers? Does the remote PC have to be 24/7 logged in to your google account, to access it. Reason I ask is that I have multiple machines to monitor, which may be in public places. As my Google account obviously links to my Gmail and GDocs, there is no way I am leaving a machine "signed in", 24/7, just so I can access it now and again. Maybe I have this wrong, please tell me so. if so, you should look at using a Twitter account, as the login method, as this can cause a lot less damage to the user if it is compromised Cheers

    @Stewart You don't need to be logged into a Gmail account via the computer's web browser for Jump to work, if thats what you mean. Jump maintains a separate connection to Google's servers and it has nothing to do with the Google session inside your web browser. The net effect is that you can be logged in as someone else on the web browser and Jump would still work with the account you've configured it with.

    That said if you want to manage public computers, I strongly recommend you create a new, separate Gmail account and use that to manage the computers instead of using your personal id.

    Ok, that sounds fair enough.So I log in once,on the remote pc, so the PC Is identified.I can then log out, and never log back in at that remote PC but Jump will remember that PC on my list of managed ones? Through this separate tunnel it creates back to Google? Are Google cool with you recommending that you advise setting up a "false"account, just to make your product easier to use? As it seems to be getting harder to set one up and I dont see an upside for them in this? Still sounds like Twitter is an easier, and less risky option. Would you not countenance that way? But I'll go and try it now :-)

    @Stewart To connect using a Google account you first need to download and configure the Jump Desktop app on your computer . Once you configure it with your Google account details, it remembers the credentials and logs you in automatically - it has nothing to do with logging in from the web browser. 

    There are technical reasons why a Google account works and why a Twitter account won't work. Specifically Jump requires an XMPP service to connect your computers together. Google offers this service but Twitter doesn't.  

    Just to be clear: the account you create will still be associated with you and you will be the valid owner of that account (it's not in anyway a false account). It sounded like you're looking to manage many different computers from an administrative context which is why I recommended you to not use your personal account. It's generally better security practice to isolate / segregate your personal accounts from work stuff (a compromise in one context will not effect the other and vise versa). That said, we're currently looking into a separate product aimed towards administrators who wish to manage 10s to 100s of computers.     I have another question about the use of the google server. Is it possible to use the same technique to enable a remote VNC connection to a Linux machine? It's very handy for the windows and Mac hosts, and would avoid the hassle of installing a reverse ssh tunnel to connect to my home machine... Thanks!

    I added the app to the mac and didn't configure it with our google profile, etc. Now I want to . How can I change this?

    @Kathleen - just click File -> Sign in and enter your Gmail credentials. Thats it. Then on the computer you want to access remotely visit http://jumpdesktop.com/go and install the automatic setup component.

    Google no longer considers Jump Desktop's sign-on encryption modern day security.  

    I tried using my Google sign-on and later received this email as follows:

    It seems Jump needs to jump to it and make security a higher priority.

    @Stephen I want to clarify a few things here: 

    1. Jump uses industry standard SSL encryption to protected your data. Encryption is not the problem - i.e. the connection between your computers and Google's servers is very safe.

    2. What is changing here is they way your Google account is authenticated. Google is migrating towards OAuth 2.0 based authentication vs the usual username and password based authentication that Jump uses. OAuth 2.0 is considered more desirable because it lets apps like Jump authenticate your account without asking for your account password. So with OAuth 2.0 you will not need to enter your Google password into Jump's Google credentials dialog. Thats really the only difference here. We're going to be rolling out OAuth 2.0 based authentication for Google accounts in our next major update.

    Hello,

    over last few weeks or months Google has been refusing more and more to login my computers (I have ~8 computers through the world, that is on different continents, in different countries) with the message noted just above (post by Stephen). I am unable to use this service for what I really have it for - I fix computers for my family when needed. It is really difficult to get my 70 year old mother to do anything through phone without seeing what they are doing and what they see. Jump Desktop is obvious great solution - when it works!

    Will you have some fix for this? I am simply unable to find way how to tell Google NOT to prevent anyone from overseas to login to this (specially for this purpose setup) google account. 

    They have recently got so bad, that login of my son's computer on US university network (located just 50 miles from home!) is considered security risk and is blocked. Come on, this is becoming unusable...

    We need some robust, reliable method to keep the computers connected - there simply does not seem to be any Google tech support which I could talk to. May be Phase Five Systems should engage Google and provide some sure way of keeping this great service running, please?

The new version is designed to more reliable and flexible - i.e. it lets you associate a single computer with multiple accounts.     Also - the new version will let you use any email address / account to log into Jump - it won't be restricted to just Google / Gmail addresses.

    I have alreaedy set up the jumpdesktop on my OSX computer and the satellite PC computer with my gmail account.  If I want to use a different google account for just jumpdesktop, how do I change the google account in jumpdesktop?  By the way, the instructions could be clearer.  Is there a manual of sorts that goes into more detail?
