Some users are reporting keyboard mapping problems with Linux / Ubuntu servers and non-standard keyboards.

e2b @jumpdesktop The Android app fails when I enter special characters like €/-:. They are all mixed up. Maybe b/c of Germany system language? 12-02-01 6:48 AM |

jumpdesktop @e2b are you using RDP or VNC to connect? Let me know what the gray subtext underneath your computer's name in Jump says. 12-02-01 8:06 PM |

e2b @jumpdesktop Unencrypted VNC with vino on Ubuntu 11.10 as server. Looks like the problem is English vs. German keyboard layout. E.g. Z↔Y ?↔_ 12-02-01 8:52 PM |

e2b @jumpdesktop Wrong chars: No option for that, but US keys are VNC standard. There were bugs in Vino or GNOME, but are likely already solved. 12-02-02 3:31 AM |

jumpdesktop @e2b Wrong chars with Vino: You might need to tell Vino to use the German keyboard layout with your connection 12-02-01 11:08 PM |

e2b @jumpdesktop Wrong chars: ... If I switch Desktop keyboard to US, Jump Desktop works fine. But other clients for Android have no problem. 12-02-02 3:33 AM |

e2b @jumpdesktop Wrong chars: ... You might look at this Open Source client: http://t.co/1DlZiQSJ Foreign keyboard mapping works fine there. 12-02-02 3:34 AM |

jumpdesktop @e2b are you only having trouble with symbols or even the alpha numeric keys? 12-02-02 3:47 AM |

e2b @jumpdesktop The keys are switched to the corresponding char of the same position on the English and German keyboards. http://t.co/WKUm1obz 12-02-02 4:51 AM |

e2b @jumpdesktop Compare these: http://t.co/76BdpP01 http://t.co/0bF8DXjN Y → Z, Z → Y, ? → _, _ → ? etc., but A → A, 0...9 → 0...9, . → . etc. 12-02-02 4:58 AM |

jumpdesktop @e2b keys: tried to reproduce this on Ubuntu 11.04 without luck. Keyboard layout was German and tried keys - seemed to work. Will try 11.10. 12-02-02 9:28 AM |

jumpdesktop @e2b couldn't get it to repro on 11.10. Are you using a physical keyboard with Jump? 12-02-03 4:29 PM |

e2b @jumpdesktop No, I use the onscreen keyboard, the default HTC keyboard and SwiftKey X. Just tried RealVNC on Windows, no problems there. 12-02-04 12:36 AM |

@e2b, I'm having trouble reproducing the issue. I'm attaching a screen shot of my current Ubuntu 11.10 configuration. Can you please let me know if it differs from your config?
Thanks.

Your configuration looks similar to mine (see attached screenshot). The only difference I see is, that I'm also using German as user and system language. I tested this point and switched both to English while the keyboard layout is still German, but the problem still exists. Also there are no vino-server configuration files that include anything like the language.
So the only difference is that my system was installed with German used in language and keyboard settings and also the home folder including the gnome profile was initially generated by a German localized system. Currently I have no time to do more tests like installing a test system in English or booting the Ubuntu Live CD. If you want to do this, I recommend dict.cc or dict.leo.org as dictionary.
I'm still wondering why other VNC clients have no keyboard layout problem when connected to the vino-server. Either they can detect the server and/or server language and change their behavior as a workaround or they use a more reliable way to transmit the typed characters.
