Mac, Cmd + Left click does not select multiple items

On a mac connecting to a mac, the Cmd key will work for some situations (for example, saving cmd+S works fine), when I use cmd with a mouse gesture (click to select individual items, or while dragging to make a copy in some software), the cmd does not register. Please help!
