A picture is worth a thousand words

Does anybody have a diagram of how this software works? I am finding the documentation confusing because the distinctions of server/client/host are not clearly made in the materials. I am old school Linux and I've used SSH many times (forward and reverse paths). I would like the documentation to clearly explain how the connections are established and what security protocols are used. I do not want the "automatic/easy" to connect explanations. I am looking for the technical details and a picture would make a world of difference.
