Unable to type accent characters requiring Option (Alt) key from Mac to Windows host

Let's say I have a French or German keyboard layout on my Mac, and am trying to make some accent characters appear on the Windows host computer, that I can only generate on my mac using the Option (Alt) key. 

The expected result is that these chars appear on the remote Windows host.

The actual result is: nothing happens. Option-generated special chars are impossible to type. I need to use the Windows graphical keyboard input simulator to type some important characters like ´ or @ -- very annoying bordering on the edge of un-usable.

  Looks really bad, guys. Unbelievable that a company in 2019 doesn't "get it". Why have this forum if nobody is here?

  I had a similar problem, on a Windows - Windows connection Alt + mouse drag&drop (e.g. to create a shortcut) does not work by default. You need to activate "Windows Shortcuts" in the Remote menu, that fixed it for me!

  Is this question still unanswered? I have the same problem from mac to windows host. What is the accepted method for inputting accent characters like ëíò ?
