This article will show you how to manually configure Jump Desktop on a Mac OS X machine.
Manual configuration steps are suitable for advanced users, for most users we recommend using the automatic configuration guide .
Please note: Mac OS X 10.4 users should download and install the Vine VNC Server and skip to the Get your Mac's local name section.
Configure Screen Sharing
Open up the Sharing system preferences application.
Enable Screen Sharing
1. Make sure Screen Sharing is enabled.
Note: You may need to un-check Remote Management in the Service list if you're no able to edit Screen Sharing settings.
Get your Mac's local name
10.5 and 10.6 users: Make a note of your Mac's name as shown in the screen shot above.
10.4 users: You should see your Mac's name in Vine Server's Host Name section.
Configure Jump
Open up Jump Desktop on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Make sure your device is on the same wireless network as your Mac (very important).
Then tap the + button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
1. Enter your Mac's name. Make sure you add .local to the end of the name. In the example above the Mac's name is jump-mac and we've added .local to the end.
2. Make sure VNC is selected.
Tap Save and go back to the main Jump screen. Then tap your Mac's row to connect. You'll be prompted to enter your VNC password. Once you enter the password, you'll have access to your Mac.
Please note - you will not be able to access your Mac from outside your wireless network. To have full access you will need to setup a dynamic dns client on your Mac and forward ports manually. Follow the steps below to do this.
Dynamic DNS
For complete remote desktop access you will need to know your computer's public IP address. We'll use your computer's public IP address to connect to your PC when you are away from your local Wifi network. A dynamic dns client will help you keep track of this. We recommend using DynDns - it's quite relaible and also free. The following steps will show you how to apply for a DynDns account and install the DynDns client on your PC. You can use other dynamic dns service providers if you like.
Users with static IP addresses: You can skip the Dynamic Dns section and go straight to port forwarding. Note: Most residential users have a dynamic IP address and will need to complete the Dynamic Dns steps below. Only skip these steps if you are sure you have a static IP address.
Create a Dynamic Dns account for your Mac
1) Enter a host name for your PC. This can be anything you want (alphabets, numbers and hyphens are only allowed in the name)
2) Select any domain name
3) Make sure Host with IP address is selected
4) Click 'Your current localtion's IP address'. This will automatically fill in the IP address field.
Go to the next page and create your account. Make sure your account is activated (click the activation link in the registration mail) and make sure your host is activated as well (you'll see a button to activate your host in the account activation page).
Download and install the DynDns Update Client
Download the DynDns update client from here (click the Download Now button): https://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/
Once the download is complete run the setup package and install the client (make sure you drag and drop the DynDns Updater app into the Applications folder).
Setup the DynDns Update client
Run the DynDns Updater application and log into your DynDns account. Note: Make sure you click the activation link sent to your email address to activate your account before you can log in.
Setup the DynDns Update client - 2
Once you've logged into your DynDns account do the following:
1) Expand your account by clicking the down-arrow icon. You should see your host there.
2) Make sure Enable updating for this host is enabled.
Get your Mac's IP Address
10.5 and 10.6 users: Open up the Screen Sharing preferences again and make a note of your Mac's IP address as shown in the screen shot above. In the above example the IP address: 192.168.0.235
10.4 users: You should see your Mac's IP address in Vine Server's IP Address section. If you have more than one listed IP address choose the one that is labeled Internal.
Configure your router for remote desktop access: Edit your router's port forward configuration
Next you'll need to visit your router's administration page and manually forward port 5900 to your Mac's IP address. The steps to do this vary for each router model. Portforward.com has a comprehensive list of step-by-step instructions for quite a few router models. First, make sure you know your router's exact make and model then go to the Portforward.com's VNC port forwarding page. Click on your router model for step-by-step instructions on how to do this. Important: You will need to find your Mac's IP address to forward ports. Use the IP address from the last step to configure port forwarding.
Configure Jump for full remote access
Open up Jump Desktop on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
Then tap the + button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
1. Enter the DynDns host name your registed for in the Create a Dynamic Dns account for your Mac on your Mac.
2. Make sure VNC is selected.
Tap Save and go back to the main Jump screen. Then tap your Mac's row to connect. You'll be prompted to enter your VNC password. Once you enter the password, you'll have full access to your Mac. To make sure you have full access, turn off your WiFi network and try connecting to your Mac over 3G. If everything is configured correctly, you should have access via 3G as well.
